The artist who goes by her first name TAIRA, was born in Russia, raised in Montreal, educated at L’Academie Julian in Paris, L’ecole des Arts in Montreal and Chouinard Academy of Art Los Angeles. Inspired by Cezanne and other fine abstract expressionists, this artist also worked with Antonio Clave, Paul Wonderlich and Karl Appel to name a few. But her work is likened more towards that of Antonio Tapies, Anthony Caro and Motherwell. Yet, with all of that, her work stands alone as that belonging to TAIRA. Joseph Solman was, with Mark Rothko, one of the founders of the New York City Expressionist painters known as "The Ten" in the 1930s. Born in Belarus, he grew up in America. He claims to have learned as much about the human figure riding home late at night on the subway and observing sleeping passengers, as he did attending the National Academy of Design. This painting is from his "Subway Gouaches" series of the 1950s. Working as a part-time bookie at the Aqueduct and Belmont race tracks in Queens, Solman would sketch on betting forms as he rode the subway to and from the track. “I have long discovered for myself,” Solman said, “that what we call the subject yields more pattern, more poetry, more drama, greater abstract design and tension than any shapes we may invent.” That observation is manifest here.
