Unlock Your Front Door With Your Phone (You Read That Right!)

The future of locks is here. And we think it is pretty damned cool.

Welcome to Kevo, the new phone app that you can use to unlock your front door (now we really believe it when everyone says, “There’s an app for that.”). But that’s not all it’s for—although not having to fumble in your purse for your keys is nice, the app also makes it possible to send “e-keys” to friends and family so that they can open your door via their phones as well. The app works via Bluetooth so that your phone and your lock can talk to each other. A nice part about this system is that the old lock still exists—should you forget your phone you can still use your keys (although the service comes with “fobs,” or little sensors you can put on your keyring which will do the same thing your phone app does).

The Kevo system on your phone senses your approach, so that all you have to do is touch the lock and the door will open. The blue sensor turns green when you’ve received entry—a cool way to know it’s been unlocked, since you don’t have the standard click of an unlocking mechanism anymore.

Here the app also demonstrates how you can give certain people set amounts of time that their “e-key” works—for example, if you have a babysitter coming over or a dog walker every week, their key will only work for the period of time that they are working. Via the app, you can give or disable access to anyone, and it lets you know exactly who and when people enter your home.

As there are a lot of questions associated with this concept, a thorough FAQ with queries such as, “What if my phone battery dies?” (we were so into the concept we hadn’t even thought of that!) is included at the bottom of the Kevo page.

Are you guys going to go for it? We think this is definitely the way things will soon be going…do you agree? Hash it out!
