5 Made-in-America Finds for the Fourth

by Mark Cutler

The Fourth of July is here! Time to eat barbecue, some pie, and celebrate our nations’ history. Before the fireworks start, I thought it’d be a perfect tribute for the holiday to find five picks from five great American designers.

Now, I know that the list is heavy on fashion designers doing goods for the home, but I selected the list based on classic American style. I think that all the designers I’ve listed uniquely understand that look, as whether they’re creating apparel or furniture, the pieces are all undeniably American.

Tommy Hilfiger

You can hardly get more Americana than Tommy, and this woven ottoman brings that preppy style into the home. I would use it in a Family Room, or maybe even a child's playroom for a punch of color. The green is my choice, but there are other colors, too.

Braided Jute Ottoman, Tommy Hilfiger, $199.99.

Calvin Klein This bed never ceases to take my breath away. It is often said that good design is less about what you put in, and more about what you take out. If that’s the case, then Calvin Klein is the king of editing, and this bed is no exception. It can get pretty severe on its own, so I would tend to put it with some more decorative pieces, as it would make a great counterpoint. Angled Bed, Calvin Klein, price upon request.

Billy Baldwin Mr. Baldwin was hired by Jackie Kennedy to redecorate the White House, and that alone would definitely put him on this list. But his contribution to the design lexicon should not be overlooked. His work is a study in simplicity and function that would do just as well in a very traditional setting as a modern one, which is not an easy feat. It’s the sort of piece I will be using for years to come. Porter Etagere, Billy Baldwin, price upon request.
Ralph Lauren This is one of my all-time favorite chairs—it’s comfortable with a chic-casual feel to it. I recently used one at a ranch in that was my idea of a cowboy-style done in a modern way (perfectly American, no?). I like to add a seat cushion just to soften it up a bit, too. Joshua Tree Lounge Chair, Ralph Lauren, price upon request.

Bunny Williams This table is nothing short of spectacular. Its influences are from all over the globe, yet what she has created is distinctly American. It’s almost a metaphor the country itself. Bunny Williams is one of the greats—she oozes style and grace and here furniture reflects it. Farm Table, Bunny Williams, $5,000.
